I seem to be caught somewhere between periomenopause and menopause. There, I said it! Whew! Why are we so afraid to talk about menopause? Our skin naturally loses collagen and elasticity as we age. Hormonal changes can make our skin drier and thinner, which is why skincare that worked in our 30s and 40s won’t do the trick anymore.
Periomenopause is changing everything and driving me crazy. My skin is dry, fine lines are showing on my face, my fingernails are peeling, and my hair looks dull. Don’t even get me started on the weight gain and brain fog. But here’s the good news: after testing some truly effective products, I’ve found a simple, realistic routine that genuinely makes my skin feel healthier and look better. And the discovery of additional products have awarded me with health improvements overall. If you recall, I was in such bad shape last May that I tried IV therapy with a high price tag and worse, without success.
Why Our Skincare Needs Change After 50
Our skin loses collagen and moisture as we age, thanks to hormonal changes and natural aging processes. It’s completely normal, but it does mean we have to adjust our routines. Hydration, gentle care, and targeted treatments become even more important.
My Current Skincare Favorites
1. Gentle Cleansing
I keep cleansing gentle and simple. Harsh cleansers used to leave my skin irritated and red. Now, I opt for something mild—Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser—to keep my skin balanced and calm. It never feels dry after washing. On the nights that my skin feels extra dry, I pour a couple drops of extra virgin olive oil on a cotton pad and use that on my entire face to remove dirt, oil, and makeup then rinse with cold water and pat dry. In the morning, I don’t use a cleanser – I just rinse well with cold water again and pat dry.
2. Hydration meets Makeup: Jones Road & Froya Organics
For specific skin concerns, I’ve found Froya Organics to be a real game-changer. Their Hyper Potent Dark Circles & Bag Eye Balm noticeably reduces puffiness around my eyes and its slight yellow tint seems to balance out the dark circles. I use it before bed and again in the morning. The Magic Wrinkle Eraser Night Balm feels nourishing without being heavy, and after consistent nightly use over two weeks, my skin genuinely appears smoother. For daytime redness and irritation, the Instant Rosacea, Acne & Redness Stopper is excellent, and I alternate between this and their Magic Revive & Glow Day Balm, depending on what my skin needs that day.
I’ve also recently fallen in love with Jones Road products. What the Foundation (WTF) in beige gives just enough coverage without settling into fine lines. It’s tinted moisturizer, which is just brilliant. Their Miracle Balm is incredibly versatile—I use it daily on my cheeks and lips for hydration and a subtle glow. On days where I want more color and coverage, I mix it with WTF. A little puff of yellow loose tinted face powder on my nose and forehead prevents shine all day long.
Jones Road’s Hippie Stick is another favorite product; it’s perfect for nourishing extra dry patches around my nose and forehead. I keep a mini Hippie Stick in my purse for dry lips. Sometimes I even swipe a bit on the top of my hands when they feel extra dry.
3. Protection
I never skip sunscreen when I know I’ll be spending time outside. A good, simple moisturizer combined with SPF (at least 30) protects my skin and keeps it hydrated all day. DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer was a great find. It’s pure magic and sourcery that it somehow works on all skin tones. Another tinted moisturizer, it gives my face the perfect sunkissed look while protecting me with SPF 46. Layering hydration with protective skincare has noticeably improved my skin’s overall texture. After time in the sun, I love using Tula eye balms to moisturize and cool the skin under my eyes.
Results I’ve Seen
Honestly, I’m spending more than I’d like, but I’m really happy with the changes. My skin feels calmer, smoother, brighter, and more radiant. My dark circles are less prominent, and redness is under control. These products make self care enjoyable because I actually see and feel a difference.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for genuine, effective skincare over 50, simplicity and consistency are key. I’ve learned it’s less about anti-aging miracles and more about products with all-natural ingredients that nourish, soothe, and protect. Additionally, hydration and proper nutrients make all the difference. Lately I feel better than I have in years… Maybe I’ll even start working out!
Have you tried any of these products or have others you swear by? I’d love to hear your recommendations and experiences!
